  • THE BENEFITS

    Hair Removal

Permanently reduce unwanted hair from the face or body in 4-8 treatments, top ups may be required twice yearly.

Eight years ago I had IPL hair removal on my legs, underams and bikini and, with a yearly (2 treatment) top up, I have not had to shave or wax since

    THE SCIENCE

IPL systems use hand held flash lamps to emit micro pulses of light across a broad band of visible wavelengths. By using gentle pulses of light momentarily to create heat, IPL can permanently disable hair follicles, preventing future growth. Similarly, IPL also achieves excellent long term results when treating thread veins, skin pigmentation, acne and other skin complaints. On your first visit, your therapist will carry out a detailed consultation and assessment before recommending a treatment plan to suit your individual requirements. Your therapist will also demonstrate the equipment and answer any questions that you may have.

The Energist ULTRATM System is the most advanced hair removal & skin rejuvenation product available. Utilising state-of-the-art Variable Pulsed Light (VPLTM) technology, the ULTRATM System can be set-up to ensure optimal parameters for a safe, fast and effective treatment.

Traditionally, most cosmetic procedures have been associated with lasers. As technology has progressed, research has shown that Intense Pulsed Light units are regularly producing better results than the laser systems originally available. Pulsed Light units are non-laser, emitting light across a broad range of wavelengths that are preferentially absorbed by the appropriate structure in the skin.

Each light pulse comprises a number of rapid shorter pulses. These ‘variable pulses’ ensure more controlled absorption by the appropriate structures whilst minimising heating of the surrounding skin. This means that a greater range of hair and skin types can be safely and effectively treated than was previously possible.

Depending upon the treatment being carried out, light emitted is preferentially absorbed by the specific structure in the skin. For hair removal, the melanin in the hair absorbs this light and is heated to a temperature that permanently inhibits the hairs’ growth.

The versatility of pulsed light systems provides a safe and effective treatment for most hair and skin types, but a consultation with your therapist will provide you with a complete treatment programme. As the treatments have little or no visible side-effects, effective procedures can be performed quickly with no down-time.

Depending upon which treatments are to be undertaken the basic procedure will stay the same: The area to be treated will be prepared and the applicator head will be stepped across to ensure complete coverage.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What hair conditions can be treated?
Unwanted hair can be removed from all parts of the body, including legs, chin, upper lip, bikini line, underarm, back and chest.

    When will I see results?
Dependent upon the treatment performed and the area treated, results will be noticed after a series of treatments over a period of months. This is due to the body’s natural hair growth cycles and skin renewal. There is no ‘magic wand’ that will make everything perfect, but a good skincare regimen devised in conjunction with your therapist will ensure the optimum results that you desire.

    Is IPL safe?

IPL is safe, non-invasive, has minimal side effects and requires no recovery time. IPL is gentler than laser and much faster as a larger area can be treated with each flash. We believe it is the most advanced hair removal and skin treatment system available. We value the comfort and safety of our clients very highly and Leanne takes the greatest care to ensure that clients feel at ease with every aspect of their treatment. Our IPL treatments are regulated by The Healthcare Inspectorate of Wales (through the Priory Lifestyle Salon - inside which we operate).

What are the side effects of IPL treatments?

Immediately after your treatment you may notice a slight reddening of the skin around the hair follicle or slight local swelling which may last for up to a few hours (or rarely a few days).

    What regulations cover IPL Clinics?

It is a Government requirement that all IPL clinics are registered with the Healthcare Inspectorate Wales, the regulatory body responsible for ensuring that private healthcare businesses operate safely and with full regard for client care. Registration with the Healthcare Inspectorate Wales is recognition that a company is using safe and appropriate equipment, has all the necessary treatment policies, procedures and protocols and is employing properly trained consultants. The Priory's compliance with regard to these regulations and policies can be accessed through the web site www.hiw.org.uk .

    Who can have IPL treatments?

We are registered/insured to treat anyone from the age of 18+ within the white skin type range.

    Does IPL hurt?

Not really, although the treatment sensation will vary from client to client. Most of our clients say that it feels like the flicking of an elastic band on their skin. Any discomfort is momentary and there is no lasting sensation.

How does IPL work on the hair?

The melanin in the hair (which gives hair its colour) absorbs the light, which is momentarily converted into heat. This heat is transferred to the growth cells at the root of the hair, permanently disabling them. Most colours of unwanted hair can be removed from all parts of the body, except very sensitive areas such as the inside of the nose and ear.

Can I have treatments if I have blonde, red, grey or white hair?

In simple terms, the greater the contrast between your hair colour and your skin colour, the more easily we can achieve great results. If you have blonde or red hair you will need to have a consultation with our therapists to determine whether there is enough pigment in the hair for you to have a successful treatment. Grey or white hairs are not always suitable for this type of treatment, as they usually do not contain sufficient melanin to absorb light. Some people find a number of grey or white hairs remain visible after a course of IPL treatments.

Why do some of the hairs grow back after my first treatment?

Hair goes through a 3-stage cycle, and IPL treatment is only effective when the hair is in the growing phase. Since only about 30% of hairs are in the growing phase at any given time, some new hairs will grow after each treatment. These are then successfully removed during subsequent treatments. This is why a course of approximately eight treatments is normally recommended, after which the number of remaining hairs is very small.

Can IPL help with polycystic ovarian syndrome?
Polycystic ovarian syndrome can lead to enhanced unwanted hair growth, for which IPL is a suitable and effective treatment. However, you may require more treatments and more regular maintenance.

How long does a treatment take?

The consultation and patch test take about 30 minutes. The IPL treatment itself can take as little as 15 minutes or as long as 1 hour, depending on the area(s) being treated, this will be discussed with you during your consultation.

    CONTRAINDICATIONS TO TREATMENT

Any men being treated will be aware that treatment would need to continue long term - at least three visits a year to achieve good results.
Women only require annual/bi-annual+ top up appointments after the initial 8 treatment course.

We also do not treat anyone that has:

  • Not reached the age of 18.
  • A skin type we are not insured for.
  • Tanned skin (active tan through sun exposure or use of tanning bed, in the past 30 days), the skin will pick up too much heat.
  • A fake tan (we need to wait until the tan has faded completely) the skin will pick up too much heat.
  • Hypopigmentation e.g. Vitiligo, the skin will pick up too much heat.
  • Inflammatory skin condition e.g. Eczema at the treatment site, the skin will pick up too much heat.
  • Skin cancer or any other cancer, and those on any form of cancer drug
therapy e.g. Ducabaxine, Flurouracil, Methotrexate. The treatment will become unsafe.
  • Used St. John’s Wort - herbal remedy often taken for depression and stress-related conditions - in the past three months, it causes the skin to
become photosensitive
  • Used Isotretinoin (Roaccutane) or Tretinoin (Retin) or high dose Vitamin A preparations or medications, in the past six months, for treatment of
acne or other skin conditions. The treatment will become unsafe.
  • Pregnancy – we treat post-pregnancy, only once periods have returned and breast feeding has been
discontinued. This is to ensure the safety of the baby and the mum.
  • Diabetes – certain diabetic drugs can cause photosensitivity. We treat
cautiously, due to loss of sensation in extremities and poor healing rate.
  • Applied topical preparations eg chemical peels, exfoliating preparations, AHA’s, glycolics, kojic acids, hydrocortisones, perfumes, deodorants, sun blocks, essential
oils, these can cause skin to be more sensitive to light.
  • Epilepsy (consult physician if in any doubt regarding condition or medica
ion). Treatment may bring on a fit.
  • We would treat with caution:

  • Clients that have had anaesthesia (general anaesthetic-in the past 3

  • Transsexuals can be treated although results can vary, and treatment should follow six months after completion of hormone therapy
  • BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT

  • For 1 month before your appointment, only shave the treatment area, do not use bleaching agents, waxing, threading, plucking or any other form of hair removal as it will stop your IPL from working.
  • Avoid tanning beds or sunbathing & heat treatments i.e. saunas, jacuzzis for at least 7 days before the
treatment. You can not be treated if your skin is tanned.
  • Cleanly shave the treatment area 24 hours before attending your appointment, do not wear make-up, deodorant or lotions etc on the treatment area when attending your appointment.
  • If you wear glasses, please bring them to your appointment.
  • Please bring a full list of any medications you take to your appointment.
  • 24 hours notice is kindly requested on appointment cancellations of over 15 minutes.
  • AFTER YOUR APPOINTMENT

  • The area treated can be red and warm for a few hours after treatment. If this is uncomfortable you can cool the area with a cold flannel/towel or some other means of cooling. It is advisable to avoid ice as this may cause an “ice burn”.
  • Soothing preparations/gels can be also be applied such as Aloe Vera, Witch Hazel
or Tea Tree oil. These help soothe the area but also have antiseptic properties.
  • If you can refrain from the use of make-up/lotions etc that day this will also give the chance
for the skin to cool naturally.
  • Try to use cleansing products that have been developed for sensitive skin for 2
days after treatment. Be gentle when drying or rubbing the area treated.
  • Avoid tanning beds or sunbathing & heat treatments i.e. saunas, jacuzzis for at least 7 days after the
treatment.
  • Always use a high SPF on the area being treated - 30 or above.
  • Between treatments, only shave the treatment area, do not use bleaching agents, waxing, threading, plucking or any other form of hair removal as it will stop your IPL from working.
  • If scabbing occurs do not pick the scab but gently exfoliate it from day 7 onwards.
  • Leave the hairs in the follicles for at least 4 days after the treatment. This will
help reduce any chances of an opportunistic infection in the damaged follicle.
The hairs will drop out naturally over the following 5 -14 days.
  • If you are unsure about anything after the treatment please contact the Priory for
further advice.
